What insurance codes are safe for billing
my services?
97124: Massage, including effleurage, petrissage and/or tapotement. This
code is used to report therapeutic massage, 15 minutes at a time, and
represents treatment to one or more areas. Therapeutic massage would be
provided in order to improve function in one or more areas of the body.
97110: Therapeutic Exercise, one or more areas, each 15 minutes. Therapeutic
exercises develop strength and endurance, range of motion, and flexibility.
97140: Manual therapy techniques (eg, mobilization/manipulation, manual
lymphatic drainage, manual traction), one or more regions, each 15 minutes.
What codes do I use for Workers Comp in California?
California still uses 1996 CPT codes, when the codes were 30 minutes
each instead of 15 minutes. Use one code of 97250 (myofascial release
-- approx $50) and one code of 97610 (soft-tissue mobilization -- approx
$50).
They will pay you a total of $69.19 for the hour when you bill it this
way.
What are the latest coding guidelines?
We recommend billing 97124 (Massage Therapy) and 97140 (Manual Therapy),
but not combining them. We have seen numerous cases of downcoding and
denials when these codes are combined. We also know that many of you are
billing 97110 and 97112, but again, these codes are frequently denied,
so we recommend sticking with the first two codes. We expect all four
codes to be properly understood and accepted very soon.
My clients ask me if I can take health
insurance for Massage?
Sorry, the answer is NO (except in Florida and Washington State -- for
an explanation refer to learning objective #2 in our 3rd edition of The
Medical Massage Office Manual for Insurance Billing). The only Insurance
that is safe and effective for massage therapists to do is auto accident
cases and workers compensation.
How much should I charge? Is it legal to
charge my patients more than my Cash Clients?
This subject is also covered in the 4th Edition of The
Medical Massage Office Manual for Insurance Billing.
While we cannot provide definite pricing for you, keep in mind that more
than double the time, knowledge, and responsibility is involved when doing
medical massage. According to the Inspector General in ruling 98-8: "There
is good cause to charge more if the added responsibilities of documentation
and delivery of services, including the possibilities of delays or denials
are present or required."
How much do your seminars cost?
The regular price for our seminars is $222/day. This price includes the
clinical text for the course in question. There are nine of these clinical
texts, one for each of the clinical courses (Levels 1-6 and 9-11).
Levels 7 & 8, the Insurance Billing and Marketing courses, make use
of David Luther's Insurance Billing Manual for Medical Massage, but the
text is optional. Therefore, this book is not included in the seminar
registration price.
If you have already taken one or more of our classes, and you wish to retake for review,
you may retake for the discounted rate of $75 per day.

What is the refund policy on the Seminars?
Seminar Deposits are non-refundable, but transferable minus a $50 registration fee. We always try
to accommodate as many therapists as possible in our seminars. As registration
is limited, once we reserve your spot, we may have to turn other students away.
Therefore, these monies are non-refundable. We understand that emergencies arise however,
and you needn’t lose what you have invested. We will transfer
payment to future seminars minus a registration fee of $50 per day and cost of books.

What is the new Take Home Exam Policy?
A test is designed to measure a student’s mastery of the information
and skills presented during a training session. In massage -- Mastery
is on two levels:
· Practical (Hands-On)
· Topic Content
To allow students adequate time to master both aspects, we will be replacing
our current testing process with a Take Home Exam. To Find out more about
our Take Home Exams visit our Policies page or simply Click
